Competing charge density waves in a van der Waals antiferromagnet CeTe₃

In recent years, research on the cooperative phenomena between charge density waves (CDW) and magnetism has been actively progressing [1]. RTe₃ (R: rare earth element), which possesses a two-dimensional crystal structure, has long been studied as a CDW material originating from Fermi surface nesting. Meanwhile, the existence of novel magnetic structures modulated by CDW has been increasingly revealed [2]. In particular, CeTe₃ is anticipated to exhibit cooperative phenomena between CDW and magnetism due to the hybridization between the Te 5p electrons responsible for CDW and the Ce 4f localized electrons near the Fermi level.

In this study, we investigated CDWs on the Te plane using scanning tunneling microscopy. As a result, we successfully observed a previously unreported new CDW order associated with the spin-flop transition induced by an applied magnetic field [3]. The wave vector of this CDW corresponds to a hidden nesting vector that had not been the focus of attention until now, suggesting a close relationship between the magnetism originating from Ce 4f spins and the Te 5p electrons constituting the Fermi surface.
